If you’ve ever wondered whether your child’s snoring, restless sleep, or trouble focusing might be linked to something deeper, you’re not alone. Airway orthodontics has become a hot topic.

In many local Facebook groups and parent chats, there’s growing curiosity and concern about airway issues in kids. As orthodontists who work closely with medical professionals, we’re here to provide clarity, science-backed information, and genuine support.

Because when it comes to your child’s breathing, sleep, and development, you deserve real answers – not hype.

Why Airway Health Matters for Growing Kids

Good sleep isn’t just about feeling rested – it’s essential for your child’s mood, focus, growth, and development. And one of the biggest factors that affects quality sleep? The airway.

A child who can’t breathe well at night may suffer from poor airway function that disrupts their ability to reach deep, restorative sleep. Over time, this can affect everything from dental development and facial growth to body posture, muscle function, and even mental well-being.

Here’s the bottom line: snoring is not normal in children. And it’s often one of the first symptoms of airway problems or compromised airway passages that should be investigated.

Airway orthodontics is just one of the pieces of the puzzle.

Signs Your Child May Have an Airway Issue (like Obstructive Sleep Apnea)

Every child is different, but some common red flags that might indicate a problem with airway development or oral function include:

  • Snoring or mouth breathing at night
  • Tossing, turning, or frequent waking during sleep
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Daytime hyperactivity or trouble focusing
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or frequent headaches
  • Falling asleep during car rides or downtime
  • Gasping or pauses in breathing while asleep
  • TMJ symptoms or jaw discomfort

These symptoms of airway dysfunction are signals that your child might not be getting the restorative sleep needed for optimal health. Taking preventive measures early is key. Airway focused orthodontics (orthodontic treatment) may be able to help.

What Is Airway Focused Orthodontics?

Airway focused orthodontics is a modern, science-driven approach that looks beyond straightening teeth to address how airway development impacts dental health, facial development, and sleep quality.

It doesn’t replace a medical diagnosis. Rather, it complements the role of sleep physicians and ENTs in diagnosing conditions like obstructive sleep apnea or other airway problems.

Our airway focused approach uses orthodontic screening to detect early warning signs and support early intervention when needed. Our focus enables us to provide orthodontic treatment that supports effective breathing, proper swallowing patterns, and tongue posture – all of which contribute to long-term health outcomes.

Our Role in the Airway Team

Airway health is complex and often requires more than just one professional. That’s why we work as part of a multi-practitioner team. Dr. Jen has privileges at Alberta Children’s Hospital, allowing us to collaborate directly with ENTs, pediatric sleep physicians, and other healthcare providers.

Orthodontists cannot diagnose airway problems- that is the role of a sleep specialist. However, we play an essential role in:

  • Screening for early signs of compromised airway or poor airway function
  • Referring families to the right specialists for diagnosis and care
  • Offering orthodontic intervention when it’s part of the treatment plan

Unlike some traditional orthodontics approaches, we stay grounded in evidence and clear boundaries. For example:

  • CBCT scans provide static images and do not show airway function during sleep. They are not effective diagnostic tools for airway health.
  • Myofunctional therapy may be helpful in rare cases but is not a proven solution for airway improvement in most children.

How Orthodontics Can Help Airway Problems

Once a diagnosis is made by the appropriate medical team, orthodontic treatment may be recommended as part of a collaborative plan. This might include:

  • Expansion of the upper jaw to widen the airway passages
  • Maxillary or mandibular advancement to improve airflow and facial balance
  • Growth guidance techniques to support facial growth and muscle function
  • In select cases, removable oral appliances to support jaw position and promote effective breathing

This type of orthodontic intervention is designed not just to improve the smile, but to support the overall well-being and patient’s health through better breathing and sleep.

Science-Backed, Parent-Focused Care Since 2011

We’ve been helping children with airway-related health issues since 2011. Dr. Jen’s Master’s thesis focused on airway, and our continued work at Alberta Children’s Hospital keeps us connected to the forefront of research.

Our airway focused orthodontics program has helped many children get the care they need so they can breathe better, sleep better, and thrive. From straightening teeth to improving oral function, our treatments support your child’s journey to optimal health.
