Invisalign vs Braces – Which Option Should You Choose?

Understanding Invisalign

Invisalign is a newer orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually shift teeth into the desired position. These aligners are custom-made for each patient, ensuring a snug fit and effective results. Invisalign is particularly popular among adults and teens who wish to maintain a natural appearance during treatment.

Pros of Invisalign

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, making them an attractive choice for those conscious about their appearance.

  • Comfort: Made from smooth plastic, they are generally more comfortable than metal braces.

  • Removability: Aligners can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing, simplifying oral hygiene.

  • Fewer Visits: Remote monitoring technology allows for fewer in-office appointments.

  • Cost: The cost of clear aligners and braces are the same at Impact Orthodontics. When we see you for your new patient exam, we will detail all fees with you.

Cons

  • Discipline Required: Aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours daily for effective results.

  • Some Tooth Movements Take Longer: Pushing with plastic is different that with metal wires so some tooth movements are slower in clear aligners.

Understanding Braces

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets and wires attached to the teeth, gradually moving them into alignment. They are highly effective for treating complex dental issues and are a tried-and-true method for achieving a perfect smile. Braces come in various forms, including metal, ceramic, and lingual braces, offering options to suit different preferences.

Pros

  • Effective for Complex Issues: Highly effective for correcting complex dental and jaw alignment issues. Often used in combination with orthognathic surgery in extreme cases of misalignment.

  • Variety of Options: Includes options like metal, clear and custom, depending on your needs.

  • You Don’t Need To Remember Them: Fixed in place, eliminating the risk of forgetting to wear them.

Cons

  • Aesthetic Concerns: More noticeable, which may be a concern for some patients.

  • Discomfort: Can cause discomfort, especially after adjustments (our Dental Pain Eraser helps with this)

  • Oral Hygiene Challenges: Requires special tools and techniques for cleaning. Your oral hygiene routine will change!

Average Treatment Time for Invisalign and Braces

With an experienced orthodontist, comprehensive orthodontic care usually takes 12-30 months.

There are factors that can impact how long it takes for braces or Invisalign to straighten teeth, such as impacted teeth, the need for jaw surgery, and anything else that creates complex cases. If aligning teeth is the main goal (and there is little to no bite correction required), treatment time will be closer to 12 months.

If treatment is more complex and bite correction is needed, Invisalign treatment and braces will take at least 18 months.

Do Braces and Invisalign Aligners Do The Same Things?

For the most part, yes. The average treatment time in both treatment options works out to be the same. We use custom clear and metal braces as well as clear aligners (Invisalign, Angel) and find that most bite corrections and teeth straightening happens in the same amount of time.

The results of treatment with custom made aligners (Invisalign, Angel) or braces (traditional braces, custom braces, ceramic braces) are also the same. These different appliances are simply different tools to get to the same end result.

Whether someone is in Invisalign treatment or metal braces for treatment, the goals are always the same. Having a treatment option (braces or Invisalign) is just that – an option for how to get to the end goal. Both Invisalign and metal brackets (braces) move teeth and bites into the correct position.

Deciding between Invisalign and braces depends on your specific needs and lifestyle.

If aesthetics and convenience are your top priorities, Invisalign might be the best choice.

However, for more complex dental issues, traditional braces could provide more effective results.

At Impact Orthodontics, our experienced orthodontists, Dr. Jen, Dr. Dena, and Dr. Wendy are available to guide you through this decision, ensuring you receive the best care tailored to your requirements.
