Have you ever wondered, “Can Invisalign correct overbite?” If so, you’re not alone. Many people are turning to Invisalign clear aligners, and other popular clear aligner system, to fix their dental issues, including overbites. But does it really work? Let’s dive into the world of clear aligners and see how they can transform your smile.
Imagine your teeth are like a symphony, and an overbite is that one instrument playing out of tune. Invisalign acts as the conductor, guiding each tooth back into harmony.
In this blog, you’ll learn about how Invisalign (and other clear aligner systems) corrects overbites, the benefits of using clear aligners, and why finding the right orthodontist is crucial for success.
What is an Overbite and Why Overbite Correction is Important?
An overbite, also known as a deep bite, occurs when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth significantly. This common dental issue can lead to problems such as jaw pain, worn-down teeth, and even speech difficulties. Overbite correction not only improves your smile but also enhances your overall dental health.
The Basics of an Overbite
Before we delve into whether Invisalign can fix overbite, it’s important to understand what constitutes an overbite. A normal bite allows for a slight overlap of the upper teeth over the bottom teeth. However, when this overlap becomes excessive, it can cause functional and aesthetic issues.
Tip: Regular dental check-ups can help detect an overbite early, making treatment simpler and more effective.
Can Invisalign Correct Overbite? The Answer is Yes!
So, can Invisalign fix overbite? Absolutely. Invisalign is a highly effective tool for correcting overbites, using a series of custom-made clear aligners to gradually move teeth into their desired positions. These aligners are changed approximately every two weeks, each set slightly different from the previous one, ensuring a steady progression toward a perfect smile.
How Invisalign Works for Overbites
Invisalign aligners are designed to apply precise, controlled forces to teeth, slowly shifting them into better alignment. The Invisalign treatment process for overbites involves moving the upper and lower teeth to correct the bite, often including adjustments to the jaw position.
Tip: Patience is key with Invisalign. Following your orthodontist’s instructions and wearing your aligners consistently will lead to the best results.
Benefits of Choosing Invisalign Over Traditional Braces
When considering how to fix an overbite, many people weigh the pros and cons of Invisalign versus traditional braces. While both options are effective, Invisalign offers several distinct advantages. Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners are subtle, have no brackets or wires, and do not impose food or dietary restrictions.
Aesthetic Appeal
One of the most significant benefits of Invisalign is its virtually invisible appearance. The clear aligners are hard to notice, allowing you to maintain confidence in your smile throughout treatment.
Comfort and Convenience
Invisalign aligners are made of smooth plastic, reducing the irritation and discomfort often associated with traditional braces. Additionally, they are removable, making it easier to eat, brush, and floss without the obstacles posed by metal brackets and wires, thus promoting better dental hygiene.
Tip: Always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water to avoid staining and maintain their clarity.
Finding the Right Orthodontist: The Key to Successful Treatment
Choosing the right orthodontist is crucial when deciding to fix an overbite with Invisalign. Orthodontic treatments, including traditional braces and clear aligners, require different levels of expertise. Not all orthodontists are equally experienced with clear aligners, so it’s essential to find one who has a proven track record of success.
Expertise Matters
Invisalign is a powerful tool, but it requires an expert hand to wield it effectively. Orthodontists with extensive experience in clear aligner therapy can devise a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, ensuring the best possible outcome.
Tip: Don’t hesitate to ask your orthodontist about their experience and success rates with Invisalign before starting your treatment.
Common Myths About Invisalign and Overbites
There are several misconceptions about Invisalign, particularly regarding its effectiveness in treating overbites. One common myth is that Invisalign cannot fix severe overbites, but in reality, an Invisalign fix can be highly effective for many patients. Let’s debunk some of these myths.
Myth #1: Invisalign Can’t Fix Severe Overbites
Many people believe that Invisalign is only suitable for mild dental issues. However, modern advancements in aligner technology allow Invisalign and other clear aligner systems to tackle even severe overbites effectively.
Myth #2: Invisalign is Only for Adults
While Invisalign is popular among adults, it is also an excellent option for teenagers. Invisalign
Teen is designed to accommodate growing mouths and includes features like compliance indicators to help ensure proper wear.
Tip: Clear aligners can be a great confidence booster for self-conscious teens. Talk to your orthodontist about Invisalign Teen options.

The Palatal Expander Explained
The world of orthodontics, with its intricate appliances and specialized procedures, can often seem like a labyrinth for parents seeking the best care for their children.
Among the various orthodontic devices available, the rapid palatal expander stands out as a crucial tool in treating children.
This article aims to demystify palate expanders, including the rapid palatal expander (RPE), and explain how these devices are used in pediatric orthodontic care.
Who Should Get a Rapid Palatal Expander?
Palatal expanders work best in young growing children. It is an early age compared to braces.
When a child has been identified as having a narrow or small upper jaw and they are 6-10 years old, we often talk to the parents about using palatal expansion (maxillary expansion) to make room for the upper teeth or change the way the teeth bite together.
These children often have overcrowded teeth, are in the mixed dentition (some baby and some grown-up teeth), and have a posterior crossbite.
The timing of palatal expansion is important. The mid palatal suture (the centre of the upper jaw) can only be moved to create the desired width and space before it fuses.
This generally means before age 12 in girls (ideally before 10) and before age 14 (ideally before 12) in boys.
The mid palatal suture closes (fuses) during puberty and the age this occurs varies widely among the population.
This is why we recommend every child see an orthodontist at the age of 7.
Understanding Palatal Expanders
What Is a Palate Expander?
A dental expander, also known as a palate expander, or a maxillary expander, is an orthodontic device designed to widen the upper jaw (maxilla) in children.
The goal of a palatal expander is to make the upper jaw wider which makes space for upper teeth and changes how the teeth bite together.
The maxilla is composed of two halves of bone joined by a suture, which does not fully fuse until late adolescence. This unique developmental window allows orthodontists to use palate expanders to create additional space and width in a child’s mouth before the suture closes fully.
Types of Palate Expanders
There are several types of palate expanders, each designed to address specific orthodontic needs:
Fixed Palate Expanders:
Hyrax Expander: A common fixed expander that uses an expansion screw mechanism to gradually widen the palate. It is attached to the molars on the upper jaw and can be used for rapid palatal expansion.
Haas Expander: Similar to the Hyrax but includes acrylic pads that press against the roof of the mouth. The Haas expander is often used for rapid palatal expansion in older children and teens when holding on to the teeth alone does not provide enough support.
Removable Palate Expanders:
Typically used for less severe cases and can be taken out for cleaning and eating. For a palatal expander that can be removed to be effective, it must be worn for 22 hours a day.
Rapid Palatal Expanders (RPE):
A type of fixed expander that works quickly to separate the two halves of the maxilla. An RPE is often called an RME for rapid maxillary expansion. This technique is advocated for any patient that has not yet gone through puberty.
How Does a Rapid Palatal Expander Work?
The RPE is a device used for maxillary expansion (skeletal expansion), attached to the upper molars using bonding or cemented bands. It features a tiny screw that can be turned incrementally each day.
This gradual expansion technique applies gentle pressure on the midpalatal sutures, encouraging the two halves of the maxilla to move apart and widen the upper jaw.
Understanding the Biology Behind Rapid Palatal Expanders
The mechanics of a rapid palatal expander (RPE) are fascinating and rooted in the biology of craniofacial development. To fully appreciate how an RPE functions, it’s essential to delve into the anatomical structures it influences, particularly the palatal bones, and the biological processes it leverages.
Anatomy of the Maxilla
The maxilla, or upper jaw, plays a crucial role in both dental alignment and facial aesthetics. It is composed of two halves joined at the midline by a suture known as the mid palatal suture.
This suture is a fibrous joint that remains flexible and malleable in children and adolescents.
Over time, typically during late adolescence, this suture begins to ossify, or harden, and the two halves of the maxilla fuse together permanently.
By the time children are young adults, the two bones of the upper jaw have become one and an oral surgeon would be needed to achieve maxillary expansion.
The Role of the Midpalatal Suture
In young patients, the midpalatal suture is not yet fused, allowing for orthodontic appliances to intervene to modify the width of the palate through palatal expansion. The primary goal of the RPE is to exploit this period of skeletal plasticity.
How the RPE Works:
Attachment to Upper Molars:
The RPE is firmly anchored to the upper molars using bonding agents or cemented bands. We call this being tooth borne. These molars are adult teeth and serve as stable points for applying force using an expansion technique.
Central Screw Mechanism:
The heart of the RPE is its central expansion screw. The use of these mini screws, when turned incrementally (usually with a special key provided by the orthodontist), exerts outward force on both sides of the maxilla. Most children do not experience pain and only report minor discomfort in the first few days while getting used to the orthodontic appliances.
Gradual Adjustment and Force Distribution:
Each turn of the screw widens the expander slightly, typically by 0.25 mm per day. This gradual adjustment applies sustained pressure on the midpalatal suture. Your orthodontist will tell you how many turns you need to do to increase the arch perimeter by the correct amount to get the desired width.
Biological Response to Expansion
The body’s response to the forces applied by the rapid palatal expander involves significant skeletal and dental changes, which are a complex interplay of mechanical and biological processes.
Mechanical Forces:
The outward force exerted by the rapid palatal expander during rapid maxillary expansion encourages the two halves of the maxilla to move apart. This movement is facilitated by the elasticity of the midpalatal suture and the surrounding bone structures.
Bone Remodeling:
When the upper jaw (maxilla) gets bigger, the body starts a natural process called bone remodeling. This means that the two bones in the roof of the mouth slowly move apart. Special cells called osteoclasts break down old bone at the edges where the bones meet. At the same time, other cells called osteoblasts create new bone in the space that’s made by the expansion.
This process helps make sure that the bigger upper jaw is supported by strong bone, keeping the jaw stable and strong.
Clinical Phases of Palatal Expander Treatment
Active Phase:
The active phase involves the daily turning of the screw on the rapid palate expander to achieve the desired expansion. This phase typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the extent of expansion needed.
During this phase, patients may notice a slight gap forming between their front teeth (diastema). This is a normal and temporary effect as the maxilla widens.
Space is made for crooked teeth to begin to straighten on their own.
Retention Phase:
After achieving the desired expansion with a rapid palate expander, the palatal expander remains in place for several months to allow for bone consolidation. This is when the two palatal bones are growing so that bone fills the gap that was formed.
This retention phase is crucial for stabilizing the newly widened maxilla and ensuring that new bone forms adequately in the expanded area.
The retention period allows the body to complete the bone remodeling process. The bone regenerates, solidifying the changes made during the active phase.
Benefits of a Rapid Palatal Expander
Creating Space:
By widening the upper arch, the rapid palate expander will create space for permanent teeth to erupt correctly, reducing the risk of crowding and misalignment.
This can mean there will be enough room for the anterior or posterior teeth to grow into the mouth.
Improving Bite Alignment:
Correcting issues such as crossbites (anterior crossbites or posterior crossbites), where the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth, improves overall bite alignment and function.
These are the skeletal effects, as the expander is actually changing the bone in the mouth.
Enhancing Aesthetics:
The expansion of the upper arch can also improve facial symmetry and aesthetics, contributing to a more balanced and attractive appearance.
When a posterior crossbite, as an example, is left untreated, the lower jaw can begin to grow off to one side. This can cause dental and functional issues.
Potential Challenges and Side Effects Of A Palate Expander
While the benefits of palatal expansion are significant, there are some potential challenges and side effects to be aware of:
Discomfort:
Initial discomfort or pressure is common as the jaw adjusts to the expander. This discomfort typically subsides within a few days.
Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any initial pain or discomfort.
Our practice provides all patients with a dental pain eraser so that they can have less pain. It often means none at all!
Speech and Eating Difficulties:
Children may experience temporary changes in speech and difficulty eating certain foods. Soft foods and patience are key during this adjustment period.
We recommend reading books out loud and taking smaller bites of food for the first few days.
Oral Hygiene:
Maintaining oral hygiene can be challenging with an hyrax expander or haas expander in place. It’s important to follow the orthodontist’s instructions for cleaning around the device to prevent plaque buildup and dental issues.
The Process of Using a Palatal Expander
Initial Consultation
The journey with a palate expander begins with an initial consultation with an orthodontist to discuss rapid palatal expansion. During this visit, the orthodontist will:
Conduct a Thorough Examination:
Examine your child’s mouth, teeth, and jaw structure.
Take X-rays and impressions to assess the need for a palate expander.
Discuss Treatment Options:
Explain the different types of palate expanders and recommend the most suitable option based on your child’s specific needs.
Discuss the treatment plan, including the duration and expected outcomes.
Installation and Adjustment
Once the decision is made to use a palate expander, the installation process involves:
Fitting the Expander:
The orthodontist will attach the expander to the upper molars using bonding or cemented bands.
Ensure the expander fits comfortably and securely in your child’s mouth after it is fully inserted.
Instruction on Adjustments:
Provide instructions on how to turn the expansion screw daily, if applicable, to achieve the desired expansion.
Schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.
Monitoring Progress
Monitoring the progress of the palate expander is crucial to ensure effective treatment:
Regular Check-Ups:
Regular visits to the orthodontist allow for adjustments and ensure the expander is working correctly.
The orthodontist will check for signs of discomfort or issues and address them promptly.
Parental Involvement:
Parents play a vital role in observing changes in their child’s oral health and reporting any concerns to the orthodontist.
We always ask that if the special key is lost or the palate expander comes loose, you let us know right away.
Encourage good oral hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing, to maintain dental health during treatment.
It can be difficult to clean around a palatal expander, so parental help will be needed.
Long-Term Benefits of Palate Expanders
Preventing More Invasive Treatments
One of the primary benefits of using a palate expander through maxillary expansion is preventing more invasive treatments in the future. The early intervention provided by rapid palatal expanders (RPEs) can significantly reduce the need for complex procedures later in life.
Avoiding Tooth Extractions
Creating Space: By creating sufficient space in the upper jaw, a palate expander can reduce the likelihood of needing tooth extractions (removal) to accommodate adult teeth. This is particularly important for children with narrow palates or crowded teeth, where the lack of space might otherwise necessitate the removal of one or more teeth.
Promoting Natural Eruption: When there is adequate space in the jaw, permanent teeth can erupt naturally and align correctly without the need for extractions. This not only preserves the natural tooth structure but also maintains the dental arch’s integrity.
Reducing Trauma: Tooth extractions can be stressful and traumatic for children. By avoiding this procedure through the use of a palate expander, children can experience a less invasive and more comfortable orthodontic treatment process.
Reducing the Need for Surgery
Early Correction of Misalignments: Early intervention with a palate expander can minimize the need for surgical interventions later in life to correct severe jaw misalignments. Addressing these issues while the jaw is still developing allows for non-surgical correction through slow expansion.
Preventing Severe Orthognathic Issues: Without early orthodontic treatment, severe orthognathic (jaw-related) issues might develop, requiring corrective jaw surgery in adulthood. Using rapid maxillary expansion during childhood can prevent these complications by ensuring the proper development of the jaw and teeth alignment.
Cost Effectiveness: Surgical procedures are often more costly and involve longer recovery times compared to the utilization of a palate expander. Investing in early orthodontic intervention can result in significant cost savings and a more straightforward treatment path.
Improving Overall Oral Health
Palate expanders contribute to improved oral health in several ways through maxillary expansion. This impact extends beyond just the aesthetics of a smile to encompass comprehensive dental health benefits.
Enhanced Dental Hygiene
Easier Cleaning: A wider palate makes it easier to clean between teeth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. When teeth are properly spaced, it is simpler to reach all surfaces with a toothbrush and floss, thus enhancing daily oral hygiene practices.
Prevention of Plaque Build-Up: Proper alignment of teeth promotes better oral hygiene practices by preventing areas where plaque can accumulate. Misaligned teeth often have nooks and crannies that are difficult to clean, leading to potential decay and gum disease.
Long-Term Oral Health: Improved hygiene reduces the risk of long-term dental issues such as periodontitis (advanced gum disease) and other serious conditions. By starting with a healthy, well-aligned mouth, children are set up for a lifetime of better oral health.
Alleviating Jaw Pain
Correcting Malocclusions: Correcting bite alignment issues can alleviate jaw pain and discomfort associated with malocclusions. Malocclusions, or improper bites, can lead to strain on the jaw muscles and joints, resulting in chronic pain and discomfort.
Reducing Teeth Grinding: Proper alignment can reduce the likelihood of bruxism (teeth grinding), which often exacerbates jaw pain and can cause additional dental damage.
Improving Functionality: By aligning the teeth and jaws correctly, a palate expander improves bite functionality, making chewing and speaking more comfortable and efficient. This enhancement in functionality can reduce the strain on jaw muscles and joints.
Boosting Self-Confidence
Addressing orthodontic issues early can have a profound impact on a child’s self-confidence.
The psychological and social benefits of having a well-aligned smile should not be underestimated.
Improved Aesthetics
Enhanced Smile: Achieving proper alignment of teeth and jaws enhances the child’s smile and facial appearance. A straighter, more uniform smile is often perceived as more attractive and can significantly boost a child’s confidence.
Balanced Facial Structure: Proper jaw alignment contributes to a more balanced facial structure, improving overall facial aesthetics. This balance can enhance how a child feels about their appearance, leading to greater self-assurance.
Positive Social Interactions: A confident smile can make social interactions more positive and enjoyable. Children who feel good about their appearance are likely to engage more openly and assertively with peers and adults.
Positive Psychological Impact
Building Self-Esteem: Addressing orthodontic concerns can lead to a more positive outlook on oral health and overall well-being. Knowing that their dental issues are being managed effectively can give children a sense of control and pride in their appearance.
Reducing Anxiety: Alleviating the stress and embarrassment associated with misaligned teeth can reduce anxiety and improve mental health. Children who are less anxious about their appearance are more likely to participate in social and academic activities.
Encouraging Healthy Habits: Early orthodontic intervention fosters a lifelong awareness of dental health and encourages the development of healthy habits. Children who experience the benefits of good oral health are more likely to continue these practices into adulthood, contributing to overall well-being.
By understanding and expanding upon these long-term benefits, parents can make informed decisions about their child’s orthodontic care. Rapid palatal expanders offer a range of advantages that extend well beyond the immediate treatment phase, setting the foundation for a lifetime of improved oral health and self-confidence.
Educating the Child
Parents play a crucial role in educating their child about the importance of orthodontic care:
Explaining the Process:
Help the child understand why they need a palate expander and how it works.
Reassure them about the benefits and address any fears or concerns.
Establishing Good Habits:
Encourage consistent oral hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing.
Monitor the child’s diet and avoid foods that may damage the expander.
Providing Emotional Support
Emotional support from parents is essential during orthodontic treatment:
Addressing Discomfort:
Offer comfort and reassurance during periods of discomfort or adjustment.
Provide soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief as needed.
Celebrating Milestones:
Celebrate milestones and progress in the treatment journey to boost the child’s morale.
Reinforce the positive outcomes and benefits of the treatment.
Communicating with the Orthodontist
Maintaining open communication with the orthodontist ensures successful treatment:
Regular Updates:

Conclusion
Palate expanders (palatal expanders, rapid palatal expanders) are valuable tools in orthodontic care for children with narrow or crowded upper jaws.
By gradually widening the maxilla before it fully fuses, these devices can prevent more invasive treatments and create adequate space for permanent teeth to erupt properly.
If you believe your child may benefit from palatal expansion, consult with an experienced orthodontist (like us) who can assess your child’s specific needs and provide appropriate treatment.
Remember that early intervention with orthodontic care can lead to better outcomes in your child’s oral health journey.
Why Choose Us?
Rapid maxillary expansion technique using a palatal expander (palate expander) is one of the best ways to create space for crowded teeth and fix the way posterior teeth bite together.

Welcome to Impact Orthodontics, your family orthodontic clinic in Calgary, Alberta. At our clinic, we provide braces and clear aligners (Invisalign, Angel) for every member of your family, ensuring that everyone can achieve a beautiful, healthy smile.
Our orthodontists are certified specialists, having completed additional specialized education and training. We understand the importance of orthodontic care for children’s overall health and self-esteem, and we are here to help guide you through the process with personalized care and expertise.
Understanding Your Child’s Orthodontic Needs
Navigating the world of orthodontics can often feel overwhelming for parents. You might find yourself staring at your child’s smile, pondering whether those slightly askew teeth or the way their bite aligns might signal a need for orthodontic intervention. It’s a common concern and one that we, at Impact Orthodontics, approach with both empathy and expertise.
Orthodontic needs can vary widely from one child to another, encompassing everything from simple aesthetic adjustments to more complex bite corrections. These conditions, if left unaddressed, can lead to difficulties in chewing, speaking, and maintaining proper oral hygiene, potentially setting the stage for more serious dental issues down the road.
Recognizing and treating these issues early can not only facilitate a smoother, more efficient course of treatment but also significantly contribute to your child’s overall well-being and self-confidence.
Our role as your family orthodontic clinic is to demystify these concerns, providing clear, understandable insights into what signs to look for and when it might be time to consider orthodontic care. For instance, crowded or widely spaced teeth, difficulties in biting or chewing, and jaw misalignment are all signals that your child might benefit from an orthodontic evaluation.
What’s equally important is understanding that orthodontic treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Each child’s needs are as unique as their smile, and thus, their treatment plan must be equally personalized.
Our dedicated team is here to ensure that you and your child are fully informed, comfortable, and confident throughout the decision-making process. We take pride in crafting customized treatment plans that respect your child’s individual needs and your family’s concerns, all while steering towards the ultimate goal of a healthy, happy smile.
In essence, understanding your child’s orthodontic needs is the first step on a journey towards improved oral health and self-esteem. It’s a path we’re committed to walking alongside you, providing professional guidance and compassionate care at every turn.

This includes a detailed examination of their teeth, jaw, and bite to identify any orthodontic needs. We utilize the latest technology to ensure this assessment is not only thorough but also comfortable for your child.
After the evaluation, we engage in an honest and open dialogue with you. This is your time to voice any observations or concerns you might have about your child’s oral health. Perhaps you’ve noticed some overcrowding, or maybe you’re curious about how their jaw alignment might affect their smile and overall health. Whatever your concerns, we’re here to listen and provide answers.
Based on the examination and our conversation, we’ll present a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to your child’s needs. This plan will outline the proposed orthodontic treatment, whether it be braces, clear aligners, or another method best suited to achieving optimal results. We aim to provide a clear understanding of what each step entails, from the duration of the treatment to what your child can expect during the process.
Our team understands that this can be a lot of information to process, which is why we dedicate this time to answering all your questions. We believe in empowering you with knowledge so that you can make informed decisions about your child’s orthodontic care. This first visit is just the beginning of a journey toward a healthier, more beautiful smile for your child, and we’re excited to be your chosen partner every step of the way.
Braces or Clear Aligners: Exploring Your Orthodontic Treatment Options
Choosing the right orthodontic treatment for your child is a significant decision that will impact not only their smile but their comfort and confidence during the treatment process. At Impact
Orthodontics, we recognize the importance of this choice and are dedicated to providing the information and guidance you need to make an informed decision.
When considering bracesand clear aligners (Invisalign, Angel), it’s essential to understand the benefits and distinctions of each option. Traditional braces have been effectively straightening teeth for decades. They are particularly efficient at correcting complex orthodontic issues and can be customized with different colors, making the treatment experience more enjoyable for younger patients.
In addition to traditional braces and clear aligners(Invisalign, Angel), hidden braces and lingual braces offer discreet treatment options for straightening teeth. Hidden braces are completely concealed and attached from behind the teeth, making them an excellent choice for adults and self-conscious individuals.
Lingual braces, placed on the inside of the teeth, utilize the latest orthodontic techniques to provide effective and invisible treatment. These options ensure that patients can achieve a beautiful smile without the braces being visible externally.
On the other hand, clear aligners (Invisalign, Angel) offer a less noticeable alternative to traditional braces. They are removable, which allows for easier cleaning and the freedom to enjoy all the foods your child loves without restriction. Clear aligners are made of smooth, comfortable material that fits snugly over the teeth, minimizing irritation. This option is often favoured for its aesthetic appeal and convenience, especially among older children and teens who are self-conscious about their appearance.
Our expert team at Impact Orthodontics is equipped to evaluate your child’s specific orthodontic needs and recommend the most effective treatment option. We consider various factors, including the complexity of the case, your child’s lifestyle, and your family’s preferences. Our goal is to ensure that whichever path you choose—be it braces or clear aligners—the journey towards a healthier, more beautiful smile is as seamless and positive as possible.
Remember, every child’s orthodontic journey is unique, and what works best for one may not be ideal for another. We are here to guide you through understanding these options, offering professional insights and answering any questions you may have. Together, we will determine the perfect fit for your child, ensuring their comfort, confidence, and radiant smile throughout the orthodontic treatment process.

Beyond Straight Teeth: The
Benefits of Orthodontic Care
Orthodontic care is about so much more than just achieving a symmetrical smile. While the aesthetic improvements are undeniable, the true value of this care runs deeper, touching on aspects of health and well-being that can have a lasting impact on your child’s life.
As part of comprehensive dental care, orthodontic treatment addresses various dental needs, including teeth whitening, wisdom teeth extraction, emergency dentistry, dental crowns & fillings, dental hygiene, sedation dentistry, and affordable financing options for patients and their families.
When we correct misalignments and irregularities in the teeth and jaw, we’re also laying the groundwork for improved oral health. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease, which can be detrimental to overall health if left untreated.
Orthodontic treatment can address various orthodontic problems, such as misaligned teeth
and bite issues.
But the benefits don’t stop at oral hygiene. Orthodontic treatment can also significantly enhance your child’s ability to chew and digest food effectively, contributing to better nutritional intake and overall physical health. Moreover, correcting bite issues and alignment can alleviate or prevent discomfort and strain in the jaw muscles and joints, leading to a decrease in headaches, earaches, and even chronic pain conditions associated with TMJ disorders.
Perhaps one of the most remarkable outcomes of orthodontic care, however, is its effect on a child’s self-esteem and confidence. A smile that one is proud to share is more than just a cosmetic achievement; it’s a gateway to improved social interactions and a more positive self-image.
This boost in confidence can encourage children to take on new challenges and step into social situations with assurance, positively influencing their academic performance and personal relationships.
In providing comprehensive orthodontic treatment, we are not just transforming smiles; we’re enhancing lives. Each adjustment and correction made in the course of treatment is a step towards not only a healthier smile but also a happier, more confident individual. Our commitment at Impact Orthodontics is to unlock these extensive benefits for your child, ensuring their journey towards a beautiful smile opens doors to greater health and well-being.

The Cost Of Braces
Are you a Calgary parent concerned about the cost of braces for your child? You’re not alone.
The cost of orthodontic treatment can be a daunting thought, and dental insurance plans can add to the financial concerns, as they may or may not cover a significant portion of the braces cost.
Here at Impact Orthodontics in Calgary, our orthodontist understands your worries and are here to help. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the cost of braces in Calgary, including traditional braces and their associated costs, demystify the pricing, and share how our practice approaches making braces affordable for every family.
Demystifying the Orthodontic Treatment Cost in Calgary
Understanding the financial aspects of orthodontic treatment is crucial for parents navigating the path to their child’s healthier smile.
In Calgary, the spectrum of braces cost reflects a variety of treatment needs, from the straightforward to the more complex.
These expenses range broadly, as outlined by the Alberta Dental Fee Guide, from a more accessible figure of $4,500 to an upper limit of $15,000. Such a disparity in pricing can initially seem overwhelming; however, it’s grounded in the bespoke nature of orthodontic treatments.
Each child’s orthodontic journey is unique, influenced by factors like the complexity of their dental issues and the estimated duration of their treatment. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment costs can vary widely, depending on individual medical needs and the type of braces used.
It’s vital to recognize that the quoted figures are not arbitrary but tailored to ensure your child receives the exact care they need. Behind these numbers lies a commitment to employing the latest technologies and techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes.
At Impact Orthodontics, our orthodontist ensures we align our pricing with these guidelines while ensuring flexibility and support for our families. Ceramic braces, for instance, are less noticeable due to their clear or tooth-colored brackets and they are no more expensive than traditional metal braces. They provide the same effectiveness in correcting misaligned teeth.
We understand that every dollar matters in family budgeting, which is why we’re dedicated to transparency about costs and proactive in offering solutions to manage them.
The wide range in costs underscores the importance of personalized consultations. Only through a detailed evaluation can we unveil the specific needs of your child’s orthodontic care and, consequently, provide a precise quote.
This personalized approach ensures that parents are not navigating the financial aspects of braces alone but have a knowledgeable and compassionate partner in the orthodontist at Impact Orthodontics.
Our Orthodontist Approach to Making Traditional Metal Braces, Ceramic Braces, and Invisalign Treatment Affordable

This enables you to commence your child’s treatment without the pressure of a significant initial outlay. We also work with all insurance providers and the insurance company to limit your out of pocket expense.
Moreover, we believe in transparency and fairness in all our dealings, which extends to our financing options. Interest-free payments are a cornerstone of our approach, ensuring that the cost you agree to is the cost you’ll meet – no hidden fees, no additional fees, no surprises. Just the actual costs.
Our monthly payment plans are structured to be manageable, fitting seamlessly into your existing budget without overstretching your financial commitments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces, Costs, and Dental or Orthodontic Insurance
Navigating the financial aspects of braces for your child can stir up a myriad of questions. We’ve compiled some of the most common inquiries we receive at Impact Orthodontics to shed light on braces cost.
Q: How can I get an accurate quote for my child’s braces?
A: The journey to a precise braces cost estimate begins with a complimentary consultation with the orthodontist at our clinic. This appointment allows our specialists to evaluate your child’s specific orthodontic needs, after which we can provide a detailed cost breakdown.
This personalized assessment ensures that you have a clear understanding of the investment involved, tailored to your child’s unique requirements. Additionally, we will discuss the treatment cost and how insurance coverage may cover a portion of the expenses.
Q: What financing options does Impact Orthodontics offer to make braces more affordable?
A: Understanding the financial strain that braces can put on families, we’ve developed a range of financing solutions. Our practice offers flexible payment plans that can be adjusted according to each family’s budget.
This includes options for minimal initial down payments and interest-free monthly installments. Our aim is to alleviate financial stress, making it feasible for your child to begin their orthodontic treatment without delay.
Our treatment coordinators are orthodontic insurance experts and they will break down the orthodontic fees at your free consultation, ensuring you know what your insurance provider will cover and what dental fees you will be responsible for.
Will You Help With My Insurance For Braces?
A: Yes, insurance is an important part of paying for braces. Coverage can vary significantly as insurance plans vary based on the employer. Orthodontic insurance covers metal braces and Invisalign.
We do not need to prove that braces are considered medically needed in order to use your insurance. The insurance company simply requires a treatment plan for the braces or Invisalign and we are good to go.
Q: Can I utilize government funding programs to help cover the cost of braces?
A: Yes, our orthodontist and team at Impact Orthodontics is well-versed in the various government funding programs available in Alberta. We are committed to guiding you through the process of accessing these resources, helping you understand how you can apply them to reduce the out-of-pocket expenses for your child’s treatment.

Whether you are a low income families or have a child where orthodontics is deemed medically necessary, we will do the paperwork for getting braces covered.
Q: What should I know about ceramic braces and their cost?
A: Ceramic or clear braces are a popular choice for those seeking a less visible orthodontic treatment. They work much the same as metal brackets (metal braces, traditional braces).
Metal and ceramic braces attach to permanent teeth to get them into proper alignment. The total cost is the same as clear aligners in our practice.
Traditional braces, metal braces, ceramic braces and clear aligners all do the same things – just slightly differently. Therefore, these orthodontic services’ total cost is the same. It is your treatment plan that includes braces that will determine the braces cost.
By addressing these FAQs, we hope to provide clarity and reassurance about the financial journey towards your child’s orthodontic treatment. Our team is here to support you through every step, ensuring you have all the information needed to make informed decisions for your child’s smile.
Why Consider Braces for Your Child’s Misaligned Teeth?
The decision to invest in metal braces, clear braces or clear aligners for your child extends far beyond the pursuit of a perfect smile. It’s a step toward ensuring their oral health is set on a solid foundation for years to come.
Reasons For Braces
Misaligned teeth can lead to a myriad of health issues, including difficulty in chewing, speech challenges, and an increased risk for cavities and gum disease due to the challenges of maintaining proper hygiene around crooked teeth.
Orthodontic treatment can rectify these issues, making daily oral care more effective and potentially preventing the need for more invasive dental procedures in the future.
But the benefits aren’t solely physical. The emotional and psychological impact of family braces can be profound.
Children and adolescents are at a critical stage in developing their self-esteem and identity; having a smile and jaw alignment they’re proud to show off can significantly boost their confidence.
This newfound self-assurance can spill over into various aspects of their lives, from improved social interactions to enhanced academic and extracurricular performance.
Choosing braces for your child is an act of love, a commitment to their overall well-being. It’s not just about straight teeth; it’s about setting them up for a lifetime of good health, good oral hygiene and confidence.

Comfort Is Important To Us
At Impact Orthodontics, we specialize in providing the most comfortable braces experience for children, ensuring that their orthodontic journey is smooth and tailored to their individual needs. We emphasize the importance of an early orthodontic assessment to address potential orthodontic problems and achieve the best treatment results.
The Canadian Dental Association recommends every child have an orthodontic assessment by age 7, as some orthodontic problems are best treated when children have a combination of adult and baby teeth.
In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of dental braces in Calgary, helping you navigate your child’s orthodontic journey with confidence and ease.
Understanding When Your Child Might Benefit from Dental Braces, Calgary (metal braces, traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, family braces, damon braces, Invisalign)
Navigating the decision to pursue dental braces for your child can often feel overwhelming. As dedicated professionals and mothers ourselves, we recognize the signs that may indicate your little one could greatly benefit from orthodontic care.
Signs Braces Treatment May Be Needed
These signs might not always be as clear-cut as crowded or misaligned teeth. Perhaps your child frequently bites their cheek or complains of difficulty while chewing or speaking; maybe their jaws seem to click or shift uncomfortably.
Early or late loss of baby teeth and habits like thumb sucking can also play a significant role in the need for orthodontic intervention. It’s these subtle cues that often go unnoticed but can significantly impact your child’s oral development and overall well-being.
Timing Is Important
Importantly, not waiting until all adult teeth are present to address orthodontic problems is crucial, especially since not all orthodontic problems can be treated if delayed. Addressing issues when children have a combination of adult and baby teeth can lead to better outcomes.
At Impact Orthodontics, our expertise lies in identifying these crucial indicators and crafting a caring and responsive approach to your child’s dental health. With our compassionate and personalized care, we’re here to guide your child towards a healthier smile, ensuring their orthodontic journey is not just effective but also as comfortable as possible.
What to Expect During Your Free Consultation
Embarking on your child’s orthodontic journey starts with a comprehensive, free initial consultation at Impact Orthodontics. During this initial visit, our caring team of orthodontists, who are mothers themselves, will warmly welcome you and your child, ensuring you both feel at ease from the moment you step into our clinic.
We’ll begin with a thorough evaluation of your child’s dental health, utilizing the latest technology to take detailed x rays and photos. This allows us to gain a complete understanding of your child’s orthodontic needs. Your dental braces Calgary experience should be enjoyable from start to finish.
The Treatment Plan
Following the examination, we’ll sit down together to discuss a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to your child.
We believe in transparent communication, so we’ll take the time to explain the proposed treatment, answer any questions, and address any concerns you may have.
This session is designed to provide you with all the necessary information to make an informed decision about your child’s orthodontic care.
It’s our goal to ensure that you leave our office feeling confident and reassured about your child’s path to a beautiful, healthy smile.
Tailoring the Experience to Your Child’s Needs
At Impact Orthodontics, we deeply understand that each child walks a unique path in life – and this extends to their orthodontic journey as well. Recognizing this, we’ve designed our practice to cater individually to the needs and comfort levels of your child.
Whether it’s their favourite colour on the bands of traditional braces or the discrete appeal of clear aligners for those a bit more self-conscious, our selection is tailored to suit their personal style and preferences.
For those dealing with crooked teeth, our orthodontic options, including clear braces and invisible braces (Invisalign and Angel aligners), offer esthetic alternatives to traditional metal braces, aiming for straight teeth without compromising on appearance.
Braces Work On Several Levels
Straight teeth are not just about a beautiful smile; they contribute to better digestion, reduced jaw pain, and fewer headaches, making general upkeep and cleaning much easier and reducing the chances of dental issues.
Our team, comprising fellow parents and experts in orthodontics, commits to a gentle, patient approach, especially with our younger or more anxious patients. We create a welcoming environment where your child can feel safe and understood, easing any nerves or concerns they might have about orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Treatment For The Under 10 Crowd
As a parent, you want the best for your child, including a healthy and beautiful smile. One way to ensure that your child’s smile potential is unlocked is through early orthodontic treatment, also known as phase 1 orthodontic treatment.
At Impact Orthodontics in Calgary, Alberta, we believe in the importance of early evaluation to address any potential orthodontic issues before they become more severe, with a specific focus on monitoring jaw growth and ensuring proper dental development.
In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of early orthodontic treatment, our approach at Impact Orthodontics, financing options, the long-term benefits, and your next steps in ensuring your child’s smile shines bright.
Why Early Orthodontic Evaluation is Key
Recognizing potential orthodontic issues at a young age through an early evaluation is fundamental.
This critical step allows our team at Impact Orthodontics to identify and assess any developing concerns with your child’s dental alignment or bite, including the role of baby teeth in creating a foundation for proper jaw development and ensuring there is enough room for the eruption of permanent teeth.
By bringing your child in for an evaluation around the tender age of 7, a time when their dental structures are malleable and growing, we’re positioned to determine whether immediate intervention might be necessary. Phase 1 treatment focuses on these early stages to prevent issues such as crooked teeth by addressing bite growth, jaw alignment, crossbite, and underbite early on.
This proactive approach not only helps in mitigating more complex orthodontic issues down the line but also significantly streamlines any future treatment plans that might be needed. It’s about laying the groundwork for a healthier oral future, ensuring that any orthodontic journey we embark on is as efficient and effective as possible, with a keen focus on jaw development and the health of baby teeth.
Demystifying Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, often referred to as interceptive orthodontic treatment, is a proactive approach aimed at addressing orthodontic issues in young children before they evolve into more complex concerns.
This early intervention phase usually involves the use of specialized appliances designed to guide the healthy growth and development of the jaw and teeth. By taking action during this pivotal time, we are able to set a strong foundation for your child’s dental health, potentially reducing the need for more extensive treatment in the future.
Our approach at Impact Orthodontics includes specialized orthodontic treatment tailored to the unique needs of each child, focusing on a two-phase approach that addresses malocclusion and aims to create a proper foundation for normal jaw development, eruption of permanent teeth, and correction of misalignments.
Our goal at Impact Orthodontics is to ensure that every young patient receives the individualized care needed to foster a vibrant, well-aligned smile that will last a lifetime.
Through this early treatment phase, we embrace the opportunity to make significant positive impacts on your child’s oral health and well-being.
Orthodontic Problems Requiring Early Orthodontic Treatment
At the age of 7 (the best age for a first visit to the orthodontist), there are some adult teeth and some baby teeth present in the mouth in most patients.
Jaw growth and the position of your child’s teeth can be assessed to determine if orthodontic treatments are required now, in the teen years or not at all.
The most common reasons to do early interceptive orthodontic treatment are listed below:
Misaligned Teeth
Severe dental crowding in the mixed dentition phase (some adult teeth and some baby teeth) can mean that some of the adult teeth will not be able to grow into the mouth the way they should.
Interceptive orthodontics with braces, expanders, clear aligners, and other appliances can make the jaws bigger and allow for proper alignment.
This can prevent the need for more complex orthodontic treatments in the teenage years like dental extractions and even jaw surgery.
Protruding Teeth
When the front teeth stick out past the lips, Phase 1 treatment can be initiated to reduce the chances of dental trauma. This usually involves pulling the upper teeth back or moving the lower teeth and jaw forward.
Early correction puts the front teeth in proper positions and protects the permanent teeth from damage.
Posterior Crossbite
When the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw, a crossbite can be present. Left untreated, growing patients can grow asymmetrically, leaving the chin off to one side.
Early orthodontic treatment corrects the width and allows for normal growth and simpler orthodontic treatment in the teen years.
Underbite/Class 3 Bite/ Anterior Crossbite
When the lower teeth are ahead of the upper teeth, we must intervene early. The upper jaw can be moved forward only in young children and doing this can greatly reduce the chances of jaw surgery being needed later.
Underbite correction is one of the most common orthodontic therapies we do as early interceptive treatment due to the importance of timing for this type of correction.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Early Treatment?
Early treatment is best for children that have severe crowding of the baby teeth or erupted permanent teeth.
It is also good for children with some speech difficulties, finger or thumb habits, bite growth problems, and if they are struggling with the appearance of their teeth.
If you are not sure, come in for a free consultation and the orthodontist can let you know if you need to start treatment or wait for more teeth to grow in.
Two Phase Orthodontic Treatment
The reason early orthodontic treatment is called Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is because it is the first of 2 phases of care.
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is completed when baby teeth are still present (mixed dentition). It is only done when it will significantly improve the final outcome when all the permanent teeth erupt.
The second phase of two phase treatment is when all of the permanent teeth are erupted and final bite correction can occur. We can not finalize the position of all teeth and the bite until all adult teeth are present in the mouth.
95% of children that have interceptive orthodontics will have a second phase in the teen years.
Our Approach at Impact Orthodontics
At Impact Orthodontics, our treatment philosophy centers around a conservative yet proactive strategy. Understanding that each child’s orthodontic journey is unique, we emphasize the importance of an initial evaluation without the immediate push towards treatment.
Our expertise tells us that while most 7-year-olds may not need early intervention, being informed about their developmental orthodontic status empowers us to foresee potential challenges. This foresight allows us to advise you accurately on whether your child might benefit from phase 1 orthodontic treatment or if a watchful waiting approach is more suitable.
When treatment is deemed necessary, we tailor our approach to address specific concerns effectively and efficiently, always with your child’s long-term dental health and happiness in mind. This thoughtful, individualized care reflects our dedication to not just meeting, but
exceeding the expectations of the families who trust us with their children’s smiles.
Financing and Treatment Options: Making Care Accessible
Navigating the financial aspects of early orthodontic treatment, including specialized approaches like two phase orthodontic treatment, doesn’t have to be a hurdle.
Two phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized orthodontic approach for children that involves two distinct phases: the first phase focuses on addressing specific oral problems at an early age, while the second phase, which starts when all permanent teeth have erupted, concentrates on refining and perfecting the smile.
This strategic, phased approach plays a crucial role in achieving optimal dental health and alignment over time, particularly for addressing Class II malocclusions and other orthodontic issues in the mixed dentition period. At Impact Orthodontics, we are deeply committed to providing your family with flexible financing options that align with your budgetary needs.
We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to benefit from personalized orthodontic care, which is why we collaborate closely with parents to design treatment plans that are both effective and financially feasible, including the option for two phase treatment.
Our dedicated team is here to guide you through the various financing options available, ensuring that the path to your child’s beautiful smile is clear and attainable. By prioritizing accessibility and affordability, we aim to ease the financial aspect of early orthodontic intervention, making it a viable option for every family seeking to invest in their child’s oral health and future well-being.
The Long-Term Benefits of Early Orthodontic Care
Embarking on early orthodontic care offers a myriad of advantages that echo throughout your child’s lifetime. This initial step towards proactive dental health not only circumvents the progression of more complex orthodontic issues but also plays a crucial role in the development of a harmonious bite and alignment.
By addressing concerns at an early stage, we can often minimize the duration and extent of future treatments, making the orthodontic journey smoother and more comfortable for your child.
Furthermore, the positive impact of early intervention extends beyond dental health; it nurtures self-assurance and positivity by fostering a smile that your child is proud to share with the world. Ensuring your child receives timely orthodontic care lays the foundation for robust oral health, contributes to their overall well-being, and supports the blossoming of their self-esteem.
Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to gift your child not just a radiant smile but a reservoir of confidence that will serve them in every walk of life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Early Interceptive Treatment
Does Phase 1 orthodontic treatment prevent the need for jaw surgery?
Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not. Phase 1 can change the position of the jaws but some genetic growth patterns are strong and even with excellent early treatment, jaw surgery is needed in the future.
Does Phase 1 treatment help the permanent teeth erupt?
It can! Movement of the bones of the jaws and the teeth in early treatment will create space where the adult teeth need it most.
Does Phase 1 treatment prevent the need for permanent tooth extraction?
It can. In cases of severe crooked teeth, there are times we can make the mouth big enough to keep all teeth. There are times when the crowding is so severe that teeth will need to be removed no matter what we do.
Does Phase 1 treatment prevent tooth decay?
For some children it does. It can be very hard to keep teeth clean when they are out of position. The easier it is to brush and floss, the less likely cavities are to happen.
Does Phase 1 treatment use traditional braces?
Sometimes. We use a variety of appliances for Phase 1 treatment. Braces are just one of the options. We also use clear aligners, expanders, retainers and many others.
How much is the initial consultation?
Initial consultations and new patient appointments are always free at Impact Ortho for anyone under the age of 20.
Does Phase 1 treatment use functional appliances?
It can. Functional appliances change the direction that jaws are growing. If the underlying problem involves the jaws, a functional appliance may be used to help correct it.
Does Phase 1 treatment prevent dental trauma?
When teeth are sticking out past the lips, dental trauma is common. In Phase 1 we can pull those teeth back to protect them from damage.
How often do we have to come in for an orthodontic visit?
Orthodontic treatment means visits as often as monthly for some children. We use digital monitoring at the practice so many of our patients only see us every 2-4 months.
Does Phase 1 treatment create space for crowded teeth?
Yes. This is often the goal of Phase 1. Your child’s treatment is commonly to create space for the permanent teeth to erupt.
Can Phase 1 treatment change bite growth?
Yes. We can use a variety of appliances to change the way the bite is growing. Phase 1 allows us a lot of flexibility because the bone is softer and more flexible than in older kids that are hitting puberty.
Does Phase 1 treatment at an early age work better than when they are older?
Sometimes. There are problems that are best addressed at age 7 or 8 and other problems that are ok to wait until 9 or 10 years old.
If you are considering braces for yourself or your child, you likely have questions about how much braces cost.
It would be great if there were one simple answer, but there is not.
How much are braces depends on your location in Alberta. The cost of braces will vary depending on the appliance needed, the length of time in treatment, and the difficulty of that treatment.
Let’s start with the Alberta Dental Fee Guide
It is likely that every orthodontist in Alberta follows the Alberta Dental Fee Guide for their fees.
The reason we can say this is that the fee guide provides a range.
The chart above shows the range of costs for treatment in the permanent teeth (all adult teeth present) and the mixed dentition (baby teeth and adult teeth present in the mouth).
As you can see, the range is quite large. The exact cost of braces for you or your child can only be determined by seeing you or your child at an orthodontic practice.
A new patient exam or consultation will give you all of the information you need about the cost of braces so that you can decide if you would like to proceed.
The New Patient Consultation – What To Expect
A good orthodontic office will provide you with an abundance of information at the new patient appointment.
They will have you fill out health forms, take some photos of your face and teeth, a 3D scan of your teeth and any xrays that are needed.
The doctor will then look at this information and determine if treatment is recommended and when it should happen.
They will present treatment options to you – usually braces or clear aligners, explain all of the pros and cons of each system and answer all of your questions.
They will tell you the exact costs, help you with insurance (if you have it) and government funding (if you qualify) and discuss payment plan options.
You will leave the office with a package of information (paper or digital) that you can review and refer to as needed.
Most custom braces and clear aligners take about 1 month to be manufactured, so your next appointment will be about 1 month later to receive your appliance.
Who Is Braces For?
Anyone wanting straighter teeth
Anyone with an uncomfortable bite
Anyone with chipping, cracking, or wear on their teeth due to how their teeth bite together
Anyone with an overbite, underbite, or crossbite
Anyone that wants a nicer smile
Anyone that wants better facial balance
Anyone with sleep apnea that is wanting correction
Anyone that is curious about if their teeth or bite can be improved
Research shows us that 85% of children would benefit from orthodontic treatment
Choosing The Right Orthodontist
Most communities in Alberta have many orthodontists to choose from.
The good news is that you do not require a referral to see an orthodontist in Alberta. This means that you can talk to friends and family, look at online reviews, and visit as many orthodontists as you want until you find the right fit.
Your relationship with your orthodontist is a long one, so be sure you feel very well taken care of and are happy with the level of service you received at that first visit.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you decide:
Was everyone I interacted with friendly and helpful?
Were all of my questions answered?
Did I feel rushed or pressured to make a decision?
Do I feel like I fully understand what they want to do and why it should be done?
Do I feel like they cared about me and heard what I needed to say?
Was the experience enjoyable or more like a transaction?
Do I want to spend more time with these people?
Here are some questions you can ask the orthodontic office to help you decide?
Do you offer multiple treatment options so that I can pick the one that is best suited to my child?
Do you offer braces and clear aligners (Invisalign treatment) for all orthodontic treatment?
Do braces and clear aligners cost the same?
How do you monitor my child to ensure they are being compliant and the plan is going well?
How do you keep my child comfortable so they do not have to worry about pain during treatment?
How often do I have to come in for appointments?
Do you have flexible payment plans and will you help me with my insurance coverage?
(If you qualify) Do you participate in all government funding programs (ADSC, NIHB, OMDS, CDIP, FSCD) and will you help me get coverage?
Will there ever be additional fees?
What is your guarantee?
Are retainers included in the fees?
Orthodontic Treatment
The words metal brackets are often used when talking about braces treatment. You can use those words interchangeably.
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces have been around for more than 100 years and used to be the only way that we moved teeth around. These braces straighten crooked teeth by using metal wires to move teeth to the desired position.
If you speak to anyone that has had traditional metal braces, they will often say that braces hurt. That no longer has to be the case. There are tools available that make orthodontic treatment very comfortable.
At Impact Orthodontics in Calgary, we use the Dental Pain Eraser to provide the most comfortable orthodontic treatments in Calgary.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces, or clear braces, work the same way as traditional metal braces, they are just clear. Like traditional braces, they are glued on to the teeth and metal wires move the adult and baby teeth into a beautiful smile.
Not everyone should use ceramic material as it can be damaging to fragile teeth.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are just like metal brackets and ceramic braces, they are just glued on to the tongue side of the teeth so they are completely hidden. Many adults like this idea, but we advise you seek an expert opinion as they can be cost prohibitive.
This type of treatment is the most expensive braces type and the cost can be too much for the treatment needed.
Invisalign (and all other clear aligners like Angel, Spark,
Clarity)
Invisalign is the most famous clear aligner brand, but many companies make clear aligners. Instead of metal wires, like traditional metal braces use, clear aligners use plastic to move the teeth.
Misaligned teeth does not mean getting braces for everyone. Not all orthodontic problems require braces. In fact, almost 100% of orthodontic treatment can be done with Invisalign or another brand of aligners.
The treatment cost is usually the same, and you end up with straight teeth and a beautiful smile both ways.
Retainers
A discussion of braces and their associated costs would not be complete without talking about retainers After your new smile has been created, retainers will hold those gorgeous teeth in place.
Typically, retainers last for 1-5 years, so it is an ongoing cost for as long as you would like your teeth to remain straight.
Don’t forget to ask about retainer costs. They are important for all treatment but are even more so for complex cases.
Orthodontic Treatment Costs | How Much Are Braces?
Orthodontic treatment, whether in metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, traditional braces, clear braces, or Invisalign, requires an orthodontic assessment in order to provide accurate fees.
How much do braces cost depends on how long it will take for you to get straight teeth, what the treatment plan is, how complex the case is, and where you live.
We make braces affordable by keeping our orthodontic fees within the Alberta Dental Fee
Guide, direct billing your insurance provider, communicating with your insurance company, providing flexible payment plans, having no hidden fees, and offering multiple financing options.
Canadian Dental Association
The Canadian dental association recommends every child see an orthodontist by the age of 7.
Getting braces can be very affordable and your new smile is just around the corner.
Does Insurance Cover Treatment?
Typically, your insurance company either offers you an orthodontic benefit or not. If you have orthodontic coverage it is usually a lifetime amount and often has an age limit.
Your insurance company does not get to decide whether you get braces or clear aligners. The coverage is the same, meaning, treatment to get the smile you’ve always wanted, is either covered or it is not.
Your regular dental insurance will often cover the cost of replacement retainers.

Maybe your dentist recommended you take your child to a myofunctional therapist.
Perhaps you heard a friend or family member talking about the benefits of this type of therapy.
In this article, we are going to talk about what myofunctional therapy is, what it helps correct and how to find the right therapist in Calgary.
Myofunctional Therapy in Calgary: Enhancing Oral Health and Wellness
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional therapy treats conditions related to the function of the muscles in the face and mouth.
This therapy involves a series of exercises and techniques designed to strengthen and retrain the orofacial muscles to improve breathing, chewing, swallowing, and sometimes speech.
The main idea behind myofunctional therapy is that issues such as speech difficulties, teeth misalignments, mouth breathing, and much more can be linked to the incorrect use or development of the muscles of the face and mouth. By addressing these muscular imbalances or weaknesses, myofunctional therapy seeks to correct the underlying causes of these conditions, leading to long-term improvements in health and well-being.
Typical elements of a myofunctional therapy program may include:
Exercises to strengthen the tongue, lips, and cheek muscles.
Techniques to improve breathing through the nose rather than the mouth.
Habits modification to address behaviors such as thumb sucking, nail-biting, or extended use of pacifiers that can affect oral development.
Posture correction to support proper orofacial muscle function.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy is often recommended for individuals of all ages, from children to adults, who exhibit signs of tongue thrusting, abnormal oral rest posture, and atypical swallowing patterns.
They may also have a tongue forward tongue posture, gum disease, an open bite, flared front teeth, and other harmful habits.
Orofacial myofunctional disorders are treated by trained myofunctional therapists who work closely with dentists, orthodontists, and other specialists to provide a comprehensive treatment approach tailored to each individual’s needs.
Understanding Myofunctional Therapy
The science behind myofunctional therapy and how it works
The science behind orofacial myofunctional therapy primarily revolves around the principles of neuromuscular re-education and adaptation, focusing on the orofacial complex, which includes the muscles of the mouth, jaw, tongue, and related structures. This therapeutic approach leverages the body’s natural ability to adapt and change in response to consistent, targeted exercises and activities. Here’s an in-depth look at the underlying scientific concepts:
Neuromuscular Re-Education
Myofunctional therapy employs exercises that are designed to improve the strength, coordination, and function of the facial muscles. The principle of neuromuscular re-education underpins this approach, suggesting that through repetitive and targeted exercises, it’s possible to alter the brain’s control over these muscles and improve oral rest posture. This is due to neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. By consistently training these muscles, patients can develop healthier habits and patterns of muscle use.
Muscle Tone and Posture
A key focus of myofunctional therapy is improving muscle tone and posture of the orofacial muscles. Poor tone and posture can lead to a variety of issues, including malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), improper breathing patterns, and inefficient chewing and swallowing. By strengthening these muscles and encouraging proper posture, myofunctional therapy aims to correct these dysfunctions, leading to improved oral and overall health.
Airway Improvement
Myofunctional therapy also plays a crucial role in enhancing the airway function. Mouth breathing, for example, is a common issue targeted by myofunctional therapy. Mouth breathing can lead to or exacerbate conditions such as sleep apnea, snoring, and other breathing-related disorders. Through exercises that promote nasal breathing and proper tongue positioning, myofunctional therapy can help improve airway patency (openness), which enhances oxygen intake and can lead to better sleep quality and overall health.
Developmental Benefits
For children, myofunctional therapy not only addresses existing issues but also supports proper orofacial development. This can have far-reaching effects, including the promotion of proper dental arch development, potentially reducing the need for orthodontic treatment later in life. It can also encourage healthy eating habits by improving chewing efficiency and promoting proper swallowing techniques.
Multidisciplinary Approach
While myofunctional therapy has its distinct mechanisms of action, it often complements other medical and dental interventions. For instance, in cases of obstructive sleep apnea, myofunctional therapy can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include CPAP therapy, dental appliances, or surgery, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of treatment.
Benefits of Myofunctional Therapy
Improved breathing patterns
Enhanced speech clarity
Reduction in symptoms of TMJ disorders
Positive impacts on sleep quality, particularly with snoring and sleep apnea
Long-term dental health benefits, including alignment issues
Recognizing Myofunctional Disorders
Signs and symptoms indicating a myofunctional disorders
Myofunctional disorders encompass a range of issues related to the muscles and functions of the mouth and face. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of these disorders is crucial for timely intervention, which can lead to more effective treatment outcomes. Here are some common indicators:
Breathing Through The Mouth
One of the most noticeable signs of a myofunctional disorder is habitual open mouth posture and breathing instead of nasal breathing. This can lead to dry mouth, increased dental decay, and may contribute to sleep disturbances.
Improper Swallowing Patterns
Also known as “tongue thrust,” this refers to a swallowing pattern where the tongue presses against or moves forward between the upper and lower teeth. This can impact dental alignment, speech, and the ability to bite through foods with the front teeth.
Speech Difficulties
Difficulties with articulation, such as lisping, can be associated with orofacial myofunctional disorders. These issues often stem from improper tongue placement during speech.
Dental Issues
Misalignments such as open bites (where front teeth don’t touch when the mouth is closed), crowded teeth, or malocclusion can indicate a myofunctional disorder. These issues are often exacerbated by improper tongue resting posture or pressure.
Difficulty Chewing
Challenges with effectively chewing food can be related to weakened or improperly functioning orofacial muscles.
Facial Pain or Discomfort
Frequent headaches, jaw pain, or facial discomfort may be linked to myofunctional disorders, particularly in cases involving temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction.
Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Orofacial myofunctional disorders can contribute to snoring and obstructive sleep apnea by affecting the airway’s openness. This is often related to the positioning of the tongue and oral tissues.
Habitual Behaviors
Habits such as thumb sucking, nail-biting, or extended use of pacifiers or bottles beyond the recommended age can both indicate and contribute to myofunctional disorders. Eliminating harmful habits is part of treatment.
Limited Tongue Mobility
A condition known as ankyloglossia, or “tongue-tie,” where the tongue’s range of motion is restricted due to a short, tight lingual frenulum, can be a sign of a myofunctional disorder. This can affect feeding in infants, speech, swallowing, and oral hygiene.
Recognizing these signs and symptoms early on can lead to a referral to an orofacial myofunctional therapist in Calgary for assessment and potentially beneficial therapy. Addressing myofunctional disorders can have a profound impact on oral health, quality of life, and overall well-being, including cosmetic changes.
Choosing the Right Myofunctional Therapist in Calgary
Orofacial myofunctional therapy is done by someone who has completed extensive training and is an expert at early detection. Therapists are university-educated and certified in Alberta and Canada. Most have a dental background and got further training due to a special interest in helping individuals with these issues.
Your first visit will be a consultation with the patient and therapist. They will ask a lot of questions, listen for certain sounds, look in the mouth, feel the muscles and provide recommendations. Often the goal is to increase awareness of certain things so that the right plan can be made.
They will prepare an individualized program that can have a significant impact on the orofacial myology of you or your children.
A Google search will provide a list of providers in Calgary; however, we recommend a visit with an orthodontist for your search. Problems with the mouth, teeth, lips, jaws and muscles are best treated with a team approach and the orthodontist is the leader.
Here, at Impact Orthodontics, with 2 locations in Calgary, we will have a free consultation with you and your child and find the right therapist to join our team if necessary.
Call or text us at 403-256-7797 to book an appointment or schedule online. We can’t wait to meet you!
I am asked almost every day if I do braces on adults in Calgary.
The answer is always “Yes!” followed by an explanation of the limitations of adult braces.
Adult Orthodontics
A discussion of adult orthodontics would not be complete without a discussion on how it differs from child or teen orthodontic treatment.
One obvious difference is that children often have baby teeth in their mouth. Adult and baby teeth are treated differently with braces treatment. Adult teeth can almost always be moved, whereas baby teeth are often not moved.
Getting To Straight Teeth
Children are growing, meaning the bones of the jaws that house the teeth are moldable.
Crooked teeth are easily made straight because of this flexibility.
In children, treatment options are plentiful. There are many great ways to get to a beautiful smile.
Adult patients, however, have bone that is not growing and changing. Misaligned teeth can only be moved within the bone that currently exists.
This means that there are more risks associated with tooth movement, as well as limited treatment options for adult patients.
Risks of Adult Orthodontics
gum recession
root shortening
black triangles (see photo below)
less than ideal final result
Limited Treatment Plan For Orthodontic Problems
extractions required more often
jaw surgery indicated more often
crossbites may need to remain
tooth reshaping (IPR) required more often
additional dental specialists involved more often
Oral Health Problems
Children generally have few oral health problems. Tooth decay is the most common. If tooth decay is present, we will ask for the general or pediatric dentist to fix this before we begin.
Adults, however, have many oral health issues due to not having properly aligned teeth and jaws. This means that not all orthodontic problems can or should be corrected. Orthodontic care should be discussed with an orthodontist to decide what is best for you.
Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is when the structures supporting teeth are not healthy.
This results in bleeding gums, recession of gums and bone loss around teeth.
When teeth are difficult to clean due to their position, or the bite is putting excessive force on teeth, resulting in wear, gum disease can be the result.
Adult braces can still be done when there is periodontal disease, but it is done with caution and often under the supervision of a periodontist.
Excessive Wear
People that clench and grind their teeth are the most likely to wear their teeth down over time.
This can result in teeth that don’t look as nice as we want them to after they have been made straight with braces.
We often involve the dentist to restore the size and shape of worn teeth to ideal so that your smile is everything you wanted.
Temporomandibular Joint Issues (TMD/TMJ)
Jaw pain can be caused by many things. It can be complicated to find the source.
We know that some people with a bad bite or crooked teeth will never have jaw joint pain and some will.
For some people, it is wise to undergo orthodontic treatment, and that will alleviate their pain.
For others, wearing braces is not the solution can can make pain worse.
An orthodontic assessment is ideal here so that you can hear all of your orthodontic treatment options and make the best decision for yourself.
You can get a straighter smile to improve your dental health and confidence all while not
worrying about the cost.
We offer flexible financing options to all patients and will direct bill your insurance company.
We offer interest-free payments and do not require a large down-payment.
Proper alignment of the upper and lower jaws and straighter teeth might mean getting braces
or clear aligners that impact your day-to-day. But, down-payments as low as $150 and monthly payments as low as $150/month mean everyone can afford the smile of their dreams.
Canadian Dental Association
